The Sertão

The semi-arid region in the Northeast of Brazil characterized by a dry and hot climate and low rainfall is called the Sertão. However, nature has shown that it is possible to live well in this region, provided that a harmonious relation is established and practices are adapted to this ecosystem.

The caatinga is the name given to the typical native vegetation. By learning from nature, and respecting its natural resources, it is possible to live with the semi-arid region. In the Sertão, thousands of families make their living from farming and animal raising, growing their crops and cultivating their traditions in harmony with the environment.
